Important Milestone on the Road to LA28 Paralympic Games

The Japan Boccia Association (JBoA) is pleased to announce that it will host the Tokyo 2027 World Boccia Cup at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium in Shibuya, Tokyo, in December 2027.

The event is one of the major competitions organized by World Boccia, the international governing body for the sport of boccia, which holds around four World Boccia Cup events each year. Athletes can earn ranking points at the event that contribute toward qualification for the Paralympic Games, making it an important competition on the road to the Los Angeles 2028 Paralympic Games (LA28).

In particular, the Tokyo 2027 World Boccia Cup is scheduled to be the final event at which athletes can earn World Boccia ranking points toward qualification for the LA28. Top athletes from around the world are expected to gather in Tokyo, where they will compete in a series of exciting and fiercely contested matches.

Athletes who will compete at the LA28 will be determined through a combination of qualification obtained via the world rankings and continental allocation slots, followed by a final qualification tournament. The final qualification tournament is expected to feature top-ranked athletes from each continent who have not secured qualification through the world ranking or continental allocation slots.

The decision to host the event in Tokyo was also made with support from the Tokyo Metropolitan Government through its initiative to attract and conduct research on international sporting events, which aims to promote sports and enhance Tokyo’s presence as a global city.

By hosting an international competition in Tokyo that brings together the world’s top athletes, the JBoA aims to carry forward the legacy of the Tokyo 2020 Games while further promoting and developing the sport of boccia. Through the event, the Association will also showcase the appeal of boccia to a wider audience and create more opportunities for people to experience and enjoy the sport.
